Step 4 of 7

Google AI Overviews & Gemini

The same Google index feeds two very different surfaces. Google AI Overviews is SERP-embedded and runs without its own crawler — your only access lever is the one you already use for classic Google Search. Gemini is conditional retrieval on the same index, but here the inversion bites: Google-Extended is the actual opt-out token. Same data, two surfaces, two completely different bot-control postures.

What to read for this step

  1. Google AI Overviews
    Platforms
  2. Google Gemini
    Platforms

After this step, you should be able to answer

  • What query types actually trigger Google AI Overviews — and why is it triggered far less often than launch coverage suggested?
  • Why does AIO often cite pages that aren't in the top 10 of the underlying SERP?
  • Why is Google-Extended the control for Gemini but not for AIO — and what does that mean operationally?
