Step 1 of 7
Mapping the engines: what varies, what doesn't
Every generative engine runs the same four-step answer loop; the differences sit at each step, not in the shape. Retrieval is live for some, index-based for others. Grounding rewards different signals. Crawler control is split across multiple bots that don’t always do what their name suggests — and the bot that does the controlling often isn’t the bot whose name matches the product.

After this step, you should be able to answer
- Which steps of the answer loop vary the most across engines — and which vary the least?
- Why can't you have one global GEO tactic that works across every engine?
- Which axis of variation matters most for your business — citation density, distribution scale, or crawler control?
